“We Have To Own Our Energy Crisis Now”

The energy crisis is partly a function of his war. But Putin no longer holds all the cards.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February is the defining event in what’s become a global energy crisis. But Suriya Jayanti, a former American diplomat who served as the Energy Unit Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, notes that “the fundamentals of an energy crisis were already in place” before the war began and that “Putin has functioned as the catalyst that has pushed the rest of the world off the energy cliff.” Suriya, a co-founder and managing director at decarbonization and renewables consultancy Eney LLC, joins Real Vision’s Andreas Steno Larsen to share her perspective on the Russia-Ukraine war and its lessons for policymakers about over-reliance on foreign powers for energy inputs as well as the consequences of a concentrated feedstock mix. The outlook for the Eurozone and nearby Ukraine and Russia is bleak – for 2022 and well beyond. But, as Suriya and Andreas discuss, these circumstances will force the reimagining of the world’s approach to energy for good. Recorded on September 22, 2022.

What's Next in Xi’s “Great Struggle”

The Chinese Communist Party will convene on October 16 with continuity and consolidation on the agenda.

A crackdown on its tech companies, the collapse of its real estate sector, and enforcement of “zero Covid” have combined to profoundly impact China’s economy, with outside observers emboldened to question the durability of the current regime. The 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was once seen to be a celebration for Xi Jinping, highlighted by his coronation for an unprecedented third term as president. As ever, though, as economist George Magnus recently tweeted, “The Congress represents continuity and consolidation.” Magnus, a research associate at the China Centre at Oxford University, joins Maggie Lake for a conversation about the Middle Kingdom and its direction, noting that the economy and the private sector serve the interests of the CCP above all else. Recorded on September 28, 2022.
